2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. However, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is also visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of unique mechanics.

A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
