The January recruitment period is typically a time of feverish rumour and potential major moves. Numerous high-profile footballers find themselves linked with transfers out of their present clubs. We examine some of the major names who could be changing clubs this month.

Antoine Semenyo

Although the Black Stars' inability to reach the AFCON, which has kept the player in contention, indications are a major move is imminent. This 25-year-old has a deal with a £65 million release clause applicable for a brief window in early January. Recent developments point to Manchester City have emerged as his signature. Former suitors such as Tottenham and Chelsea reportedly have turned their attention to other options, leaving teams such as Liverpool or Manchester United to attempt a last-minute bid.

Marc Guéhi

Marc-André ter Stegen

The veteran German goalkeeper finds himself as third-choice at Barcelona following new manager Hansi Flick. Having fallen out of favour and undergone surgery, a winter exit looks increasingly likely. Villa were initially mentioned as a possible destination, but that option now appears off. Instead, clubs from Turkey and Saudi Arabia are thought to be showing interest in the keeper.

Ivan Toney

The prolific English striker has continued finding the net regularly in Saudi Arabia. Coming back to the Premier League could boost his fading chances of being in the England World Cup. However, securing a transfer presents significant hurdles. His current club are reluctant to sell him, and his reported enormous weekly wages make any agreement complicated. Tottenham, Manchester United, and Everton have all been mentioned as interested parties.

Juventus are desperate to secure the 20-year-old to a lengthy contract but are in a battle to keep one of Europe's most promising young talents.

K. Smit

This much-admired Netherlands teenage midfielder has earned parallels to Kevin De Bruyne for his style of play. After starring at the Under-19 European Championship, Smit has broken into the AZ first team. The teenager is heavily tipped to make a big-money move this month. Newcastle United are believed to be frontrunners, but could face strong rivalry from the Spanish champions for a signing priced at around £22 million.
