Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Fans

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal made toward fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.

“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

League Context for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
  • Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.

Offseason Issues and Public Spotlight

The incident comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt key defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing effort to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
