Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island located within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to continue the legacy and commitment of the family owners has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is built upon, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
