Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
