Top-Flight Headlines: Hannibal Suspended for Misconduct; City Boss Insists 'Back Line Has to Improve'

From the world of English football developments, a notable midfielder was issued a lengthy suspension, a head coach has singled to a player's errors to make a point, and Pep Guardiola has called for defensive betterment following a chaotic win.

Mejbri Handed Four-Match Ban and Fine

Burnley's player Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-match suspension and a £15,000 fine for improper behaviour during a recent fixture against Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player faced an independent disciplinary panel following an incident of spitting towards away fans around the 67th mark during a 2-0 victory for Burnley.

An FA release said: “A disciplinary panel has punished the Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions during their top-flight game against Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that he behaved in breach of the laws of the game or in a poor way and/or engaging in offensive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the area of Leeds United fans.”

It continued, “Mejbri later accepted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match ban and £15,000 following a hearing. The panel's written reasons for the sanction are to be released at a later date.” Burnley, now 19th in the Premier League standings, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle on Saturday.

Maresca Points to Tosin's Errors to Prove a Point

The Blues' head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of experience is not an issue for his club, highlighting how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not prevent him from having poorly during the defeat against Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who oversees the most youthful squad in the Premier League, does not feel that inexperience played a part in the poor result. He made his case by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's most experienced player in the lineup, after he produced a mistake-riddled display at the back.

“We always talk about a lack of experience when we fail to win,” Maresca stated. “When we defeated Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, nobody was talking about older personnel. I understand that when we don’t win, we are constantly looking for the reason why, but I think the reason why we didn’t win against Leeds is not because of inexperience, it’s because we were not good enough.”

He added, “Who is the most senior player for us on the pitch? It was Tosin. Did he play any good? Therefore, it isn't related to his age. It's that those 11 men, they were simply not good enough.”

3. Guardiola Says Defence 'Must Improve'

Pep Guardiola has stated his team have learnt from a midweek thriller against Fulham with the game is now in the past. City held on to claim a 5-4 win in a remarkable clash on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with about an hour gone.

Coming after they resisted a Leeds comeback to win 3-2 in the prior fixture, prompting further doubts regarding whether they are resilient required to mount a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” he commented. “Valuable learnings, I hope. At this level, at all the clubs, one must take onboard both good and bad performances and results and focus on what's next.”

“Of course I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse the cause, to not concede so many goals. With the three goals scored against Leeds, and five against Fulham you can see the two versions, correct? So, always we have done plenty of good things. Yet the number of shots on target had Leeds ? Three? Scored two. It’s not good. And attempts did Fulham have? Five, six? So, the average of shots conceded we can see too high. We have to improve.”

4. Newcastle Focus New Livramento and Botman Contracts

The Magpies' new sporting director, Ross Wilson, has made contract negotiations involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his to-do list for the club. He arrived after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and was pleased to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a contract that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

This allows Wilson to prioritise talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, the club's talks are being treated with a certain importance.

“The initial three or four days after starting was when I discovered that Sandro’s contract situation is much better than I had thought,” he stated. “But it’s no secret that the club wishes to extend Tino’s contract and also wants to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are ongoing.”

Manager Eddie Howe is missing Botman against the home game against Burnley this Saturday, and he likely to remain out for another week.

5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start for West Ham

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has stated that Lucas Paquetá is back to start when the side face Brighton on Sunday, having completed his suspension for the sending-off against Liverpool.

“It is behind us,” Nuno remarked. “I am positive it won't happen again as he himself acknowledged the error. We spoke internally. I believe it is over and it will not happen again.”

Nuno also understands the significant pressure facing his team, currently 18th ahead of the weekend fixtures. “We cannot ignore it,” he said. “It's a reality. We have to confront it. We're battling for our top-flight status. We can't hide it.”

Arteta Pleased with No 9 Deputy Merino

The Spanish midfielder could continue as Arsenal’s central striker even when their regular strikers are fit again. The midfielder has been deployed as a makeshift number nine because of fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
