The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
