During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an bold beginning to his term.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
